Dit zijn alle films en docu’s, die ik de laatste tijd heb gezien. En het waren allemaal aanraders. Kijk je mee?
JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI
Dit is een documentaire over de 84-jarige Jiro Ono die een sushi-restaurant heeft in een metrostation in Tokyo. Hij staat bekend als ’s werelds beste sushi chef. Alhoewel zijn restaurant maar plek heeft voor 10 gasten en zich in een metrostation bevindt, heeft het al drie michelinsterren op zak. Het verhaal gaat over hem, zijn restaurant, zijn zoon en zijn liefde voor sushi.
Ik ben zelf gek op sushi en was ontzettend benieuwd wat deze man zo bijzonder maakt. Het is een fijne documentaire om weg te kijken. Het verhaal is traag en alle aspecten van het werken in het restaurant komen naar voren. Het moraal van het verhaal is dat je door hard te werken en van je werk te houden heel veel kunt bereiken. Wel vraag ik me af en toe af wat Jiro’s vrouw ervan vindt dat hij al dik vijftig jaar elke dag weg is…

THE GREAT GATSBY
Het romantische drama speelt zich af in de roaring twenties in de Verenigde Staten, toen alles economisch meezat. Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit het perspectief van Nick Carraway, die de wereld van de miljonair Jay Gatsby ineen ziet storten omdat hij geobsedeerd is zijn grote liefde Daisy Buchanan voor zich terug te winnen.
Deze film heb ik in de bioscoop gezien met een 3D-bril op mijn neus. Ik ben niet zo gek op 3D, maar hierbij vond ik het wel passen. De film was groots, prachtig aangekleed, romantisch, spannend en dramatisch. De acteurs waren goed en het verhaal meeslepend, oftewel een aanrader! (het liefst in de bioscoop, dan zijn alle fantastische details wat beter te zien…) Bereid je er wel op voor dat je een stuk meer van Tobey Maguire zult zien dan van Leonardo DiCaprio, mocht je dat interessante informatie vinden…

GONE BABY GONE
Casey Affleck en Michelle Monaghan spelen een detectiveduo dat de ontvoering van een vierjarig meisje onderzoekt. Ze zijn ingehuurd door een tante, die de rol van de politie in de zaak wantrouwt. Het verhaal speelt zich af in een grimmig Boston, vol corruptie en duistere geheimen.
Ik vond dit een mooie film die me raakte aan het einde. Er zijn na de eerste helft nogal wat plotwendingen. Het zijn er iets teveel naar mijn mening, maar een enorm minpunt vind ik het niet. Wat ik erg goed vond aan deze film is dat er nogal wat keuzes moeten worden gemaakt door de hoofdpersonen en dat het niet vanzelfsprekend is wat de goede keuze is. Vaak is dat nogal zwart/wit in Hollywood-films. Hier blijf je achter met de vraag: ‘Wat zou ik hebben gedaan?’

THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES
Jackie en David lieten heel enthousiast het grootste huis van Amerika bouwen, een enorm paleis van 90.000 m2 geïnspireerd op het Paleis van Versailles in Frankrijk. Maar toen kwam de economische crisis; hun succesvolle zelf opgebouwde ’timeshare’ onderneming stort ineen, terwijl het huis nog maar half is afgebouwd. Hoe redden ze zich hier uit? Personifiëren zij het verhaal van een uiteengespatte American Dream of krabbelen ze nog op?
Dit is een documentaire die ik ging kijken omdat ik iets luchtigs wilde kijken na een lange dag. De film is mooi opgebouwd en het verveelt geen moment. Jackie blijkt een charmante vrouw te zijn die ontzettend like-able is. Maar haar man krijgt het steeds zwaarder met de financiële problemen rond zijn bedrijf en daardoor wordt het steeds grimmiger in huis. Jackie zet alles op alles om de familie dichter bij elkaar te brengen en is er verrassend nuchter onder. Het verhaal blijkt een stuk minder luchtig te zijn dat de trailer doet voorkomen…

THE IMPOSSIBLE
Maria en Henry gaan met hun drie zoontjes op vakantie naar Thailand en hopen daar te kunnen genieten van een fijne vakantie. Hier komt snel verandering in op 26 december het noodlot toeslaat. Een tsunami komt hun kant op en verwoest alles op zijn pad.
De kracht van deze film is dat je ontzettend snel mee leeft met de karakters. En omdat er zoveel met ze gebeurd blijf je tot het einde van de film op het puntje van je stoel zitten. Ik heb er zelfs ’s nachts over gedroomd, zo’n indruk maakte deze film op mij. Een aanrader dus als je van spannende en meeslepende films houdt.
