Gastblog door Tea – Het songfestival, voor de ene een groot vraagteken en voor de ander één van de hoogtepunten van het jaar. Er gaat bijna niks boven een avondje samenkomen met vrienden en van het grootste muziekevenement van de wereld te genieten. Of dat nou voor een bingo avond is (hebben jullie je kaarten al klaarliggen?), een drankspel (bijna hetzelfde als de bingo, maar dan met shotjes), het commentaar van Graham Norton of gewoon om de logica proberen te begrijpen van sommige teksten (‘We belong to each other like a sister and a brother…’ ok Oekraine 2014)…

Zo gaan zaterdag alle politieke (ok meeste) voorkeuren aan de kant en genieten we van die foute teksten, vuurwerk en alles wat bij het Songfestival hoort. Tot die tijd vermaak ik me met een paar favorieten die een special plek in mijn hart hebben.

Hajde Da Ludujemo van Tajci
Is denk ik mijn eerste herinnering van het songfestival. En hoewel ik me eigenlijk helemaal niks van het hele songfestival zelf herinner, weet ik door alle verhalen en foto’s dat ik een tijdje alleen mijn paarse jurk aan wou en dat iedereen me op de wang een kus moest geven. Ik ben gelukkig op het juiste pad terecht gekomen, want als dat mijn fight song was gebleven dan was er niet veel van me geworden.

Was één van de laatste keren dat ik het met neefjes en nichtjes in Duitsland keek en dat we allemaal zakgeld kregen om iets te kopen voor de avond zelf. En aangezien het een klassiek Nederland vs. Duitsland event was, ging het er wild aan toe. Toen Nederland tweede werd (en Duitsland ergens in het midden bleef steken) was ik natuurlijk de grote winnaar die avond. De neefjes en nichtjes waren ook al snel om (want HALLO, No Goodbye is een klassieker) en voor we het wisten verzamelden we alle lakens in huis om een tentenjurk te maken – oh de memories.

Het jaar dat dit liedje won, zat ik op werelddansen (don’t ask… ik ben toondoof, heb dus geen gevoel voor ritme en heb geen idee hoe ik daar terecht ben gekomen) en een week of twee voor het songfestival behandelende we buikdansen (mijn shimmy kan er trouwens best mee door). Nadat dit liedje won, kwamen er opeens heel veel mensen op de lessen af, maar de lerares gaf niet toe, ging door met HAAR programma en langzaam verdwenen die mensen weer en bleven we over met ons oude vertrouwende clubje.

 

Lane Moje van Zeljko Joksimovic
Iets wat ik heel jammer vind, is dat de laatste jaren de meeste liedjes in het Engels zijn. Voor mijn gevoel heeft een goed songfestival liedje óf een lichte techno beat óf een beetje een volkdeuntje en een paar jaar lang hebben mijn Balkan home-boys dit helemaal begrepen. Lane Moje is een klassiek Balkan liefdesliedje met een depressieve en dramatisch ondertoon en het is mede door dit liedje dat ik de volksmuziek van mijn vaderland ben gaan waarderen.  Een voordeel van mijn ‘Balkan’ achtergrond is dat ik bij bijvoorbeeld tijdens het Songfestival mijn winkansen kan spreiden (#nospon) over de vele landen die voortkwamen uit het voormalige Joegoslavie.

 

Wild Dances van Ruslana
Zeljko verloor dat jaar van Ruslana, het Oost Europese antwoord op Shakira meets Game of Thrones, waar ik natuurlijk van baalde. Maar het was wel Ruslana die het ‘show’ gedeelte van het Songfestival naar the next level bracht en het jaar erna waren er opeens veel meer gimmicks en vooral veel meer vuur.

Bosnie had natuurlijk gezien dat het traditionele aspect het goed deed en ze vroegen hulp van de Servische meneer die eerder meedeed met Lane Moje en ook dit was een klassieker, maar niet sterk genoeg om de metal-heads uit Finland te verslaan. De zomer erna ging ik op mijn laatst familie vakantie naar Bosnië (eentje waar bijna al mijn andere familie uit andere landen ook waren) en dit liedje was een sportvan soundtrack van die vakantie omdat het in elke café, restaurant en club (wel de Balkan techno beats versie) voorbij kwam. Oh enne nee, de naam heeft niks te maken met een Friese exotische danseres/spionne… Een vraag die ik heel vaak heb gekregen.

 

Hard Rock Hallelujah van Lordi
In de paar maanden dat ik in Finland woonde, leerde ik snel dat Finnen net zo serieus zijn over het hele songfestivalgebeuren als ik en ik heb toen overwogen om voor het festivalweekend erheen te vliegen om een feestje bij een studie genoot bij te wonen. Het zou een duur grapje zijn worden, dus die houden ze nog van me tegoed, maar ik denk niet dat Lordi te verslaan zijn.

 

No, No, Never van Texas Lightning
De zomer van 2006 zat ik in Duitsland voor stage bij een welbekend groen vakantie park. Bij de receptie hadden we de hele zomer een playlist aan staan en ik heb dit liedje 12 weken lang, 6 dagen per week, 7 keer per dag gehoord. En ik overdrijf niet, als je me midden in de nacht wakker maakt en een stukje begint te zingen kan ik het afmaken. Geen grapje…

 

Out On My Own van Michelle
Omdat ik me komende zaterdag wilde laten verassen door al het goeds (en euhm het minder goeds) ga ik de halve finales niet kijken. Maar ik weet wel dat de Engelse kandidate, Lucie Jones, op blote voeten gaat optreden omdat het hier in London overal voorbij komt. Net zoals toen ‘onze’ Michelle dat in 2001 deed, want hoewel ik me heel weinig van dat jaar herinner, weet ik nog wel dat dat groot nieuws was. Ik hoop voor Lucie dat ze het beter gaat doen dan Michelle though…
