Deze What I love friday is meer een ’tip van de week’ geworden. Ik roep al de hele week tegen iedereen die het wil horen: ‘Ga The Google Whack Adventure van Dave Gorman kijken!’ En nu zijn jullie aan de beurt. Ik zal in deze blogpost uitleggen hoe ik er bij kwam en waarom jullie het ook moeten gaan kijken.
Toen we op vakantie in Edinburgh waren en na een dagje door de Highlands touren onderuit gezakt voor de tv zaten, kwamen we toevallig bij het nieuwste programma van Dave Gorman terecht: Modern life is goodish. Dave Gorman is een comedian en dat programma is fantastisch. Echt. Hier is een teaser:
En hoe leuk dit programma ook is, je kunt niks met die informatie. Want je kunt het hier niet op televisie kijken, niet downloaden of kopen op dvd. Ik baalde gigantisch toen ik daar thuis achterkwam. :(
Maar Tom duikelde iets anders op van Dave Gorman: The Google Whack Adventure. And ladies and gentlemen, we struck gold! Het is een voorstelling van Dave Gorman uit 2003. En meestal kijk ik geen dingen van tien jaar geleden, want alles doet zo gedateerd aan. Maar behalve de nokia telefoon en de interface van google, is er niks gedateerd aan. Het is, zoals de titel doet vermoeden, een avontuur. Dave is zelf heel goed in het omschrijven van dit avontuur, lees met me mee:
‘At the age of 31 I decided it was time to be taken seriously. I decided I wanted to write a novel. I started by growing a beard. Somehow this helped to persuade a publisher to give me a deal for a novel. The idiots started by giving me a healthy sum of money. That was their first mistake.’

Initially googlewhacking seemed to be a pleasant enough distraction. Just something to do while sitting at my computer thinking about how to start writing my novel. I had no idea it was about to take over my life. Explaining quite how it grew is more complicated than can be sensibly explained here. In short… what started as work-avoidance built up into something of a breakdown.’
