Tom is bijna jarig en geeft een feestje. En het thema wordt bier. Niet dat het zo’n mannelijke man is hoor, die Tom. Het is vooral een hele lieve vent die van lekkere dingen houdt. En die fancy speciaalbiertjes in van die designerflesjes, die gaan er lekker in tegenwoordig. En bij een bierfeestje hoort biertaart dacht ik. Met bacon. En dus bakte ik vast voor proef (niks voor mij) met een recept van een Amerikaanse blog, een echte mannentaart. En hoe dat ging, dat lees je in dit artikel…
Ik zal namelijk wel niet de enige zijn die tijdens het lezen van een recept tien keer verward achter zijn oren krabt, de juiste spullen niet in huis heeft of stiekem het halve recept verandert naar smaak… Dit is hoe mijn gedachten door mijn hoofd schoten tijdens het maken van Bacon, Beer and Potato Chip Cookie Bars:
▲ Bij het allereerste wat ik moet slaat de twijfel al toe. Ik moet mijn bakblik bekleden met aluminiumfolie. Beide heb ik in huis, dus dat gaat op zich goed. Maar het bakblik is een heel klein beetje te groot en er zitten door iets te ruig bekleden een paar gaatjes in de folie. Disaster is waiting to happen…
▲ ‘Verwarm de oven voor op 180C.’ Yeah right, alsof ik mijn mix binnen tien minuten klaar ga hebben. Dat doe ik dus straks wel (over een uur, als ik mijn act together heb).
▲ De boter moet zacht zijn maar komt net uit de koelkast. Even in de magnetron? Maar dan is het straks soep, dat is vast ook niet de bedoeling.
▲ En wacht even, moet er een HEEL pakje boter in?! Dat is wel héél heftig. Zal ik de helft doen met een beetje extra kokosvet doen? Ja dat doe ik. Go crazy.
▲ Weet je wat? Ik ga eerst alles afwegen en in bakjes doen zodat ik het in één beweging in mijn beslagkom kan gooien net zoals op tv… Ik wed dat Jamie Oliver daarom binnen 15 minuten een maaltijd op tafel kan zetten. Heb ik straks wel een heleboel afwas, maar dat lost de afwasmachine gelukkig voor me op. ^_^
▲ Ik vind die donkere suiker meer dan genoeg hoor, om er nou ook nog witte suiker bij te doen. Dat wordt vast megazoet. Ik heb ooit eens cupcakes gemaakt met een Amerikaans recept en toen vielen mijn tanden bijna uit mijn mond van alle suiker. Dus dat kan vast wel wat minder. Ojee, ik ben nu al totally off recipe…
▲ En teveel vanille vind ik overheersend, dus dat mag ook wel wat minder… Ik ben benieuwd wat gebeurt met deze taart nu ik overal de helft van weglaat, haha.
▲ 1 tsp baking soda. Dat heb ik dus gewoon in huis hè? Supertrots. Thanks gigantische Jumbo supermarkt met je mega assortiment. Met dat spul schijn je ook je matras te kunnen reinigen. Bijzondere kwaliteiten heeft dat spul…
▲ Haha, ik heb er zolang over gedaan om alles af te wegen en in bakjes te doen dat de boter vanzelf al zacht is geworden. Weer een probleem minder dus!
▲ Zoooo, even een beetje spek bakken voor in de taart. :D Ja inderdaad, er gaat bacon in! Hoe awesome! En ik vind vier plakjes voor een hele taart eigenlijk dan weer te weinig. Maar laat ik me er flink aan houden. Kijken we straks wel of het genoeg was of dat er meer in kan de volgende keer.
▲ Dit zal wel heel dom zijn, maar het beslag is zo dik dat ik een randje vrij kan laten. Want mijn bakblik was een heel klein beetje te groot, remember? Zou dat blijven zitten of uitlopen?
▲ Ok, het loopt uit. Geen briljante beslissing daar. Nu is er een stuk van vijf cm breed dat veel dunner is. Volgende keer helemaal uitsmeren dus. Zal ik maar niet mee gaan doen aan Heel Holland Bakt?
▲ Excuse me?! Gaat er meer dan een hele zak fudge in de karamelsaus? Zijn ze nou helemaal?! Een kwart zakje lijkt me zat. Guilty pleasure ok, maar bij elke hap een hartaanval is ook zo overdreven.
▲ In plaats van veel fudge doe ik er lekker meer bier in dan in het recept stond. Het moet wel een echte mannentaart worden. Ik wist trouwens niet dat ik zo eigenwijs was als ik recepten gebruikte. Kom je nog eens wat te weten over jezelf…
▲ Hm, weet niet of dat zo slim was, zoveel bier, nu is het een hele natte saus… O het moest toch nog tien minuten sudderen. Misschien kookt het vocht er dan een beetje uit.
▲ Ok, net heel voorzichtig wat van de karamelsaus geproefd en het is hemels. Ik mieter die cake straks weg en lepel dit gewoon naar binnen. Het zou weleens het laatste zijn wat ik heb gegeten, maar ik denk dat dat het wel waard is.
▲ Net de karamel-lepel aan Tom gegeven om af te likken en hij vond dat er nog wel wat meer bier bij kon. Maar iets kouds bij kokende karamel gooien zal vast niet slim zijn. Dan maar even onthouden voor de volgende keer.
▲ Ok, de karamelsaus is GE-WEL-DIG geworden, helemaal niet te dun. YES! En precies genoeg. Vier keer zoveel was echt een zoete bende geworden. Puntje voor mij!
▲ En als laatst nog even de chocoladebuttons, mini pretzels en pinda’s (ik had geen peanut butter chips) eroverheen gooien en een beetje in de karamel drukken.

▲ Ik sleepte mijn pasgemaakte baksel mee in een kartonnen doos op de fiets om aan vrienden te laten proeven. Dit waren de recensies:

‘Zit er bacon in? Grapje zeker. Echt waar? O, dat had ik niet geproefd.’

‘Ja er kan de volgende keer wel wat meer boter in, hij was een beetje te kruimelig.’
‘Mmm, ze ruiken een beetje naar Reeses pièces, die dingen zijn echt heel erg lekker.’

Conclusie: suikerverhouding en karamelverhouding was goed. Maar er mag de volgende keer meer bier in de fudge en veel meer bacon doorheen en bovenop. Komt voor de bakker!
